20 Cents. 1858. Re-Engraved 5. ICCS graded Gem Uncirculated-65. The 1858 20 cent was destined to become a single-year type due to its poor fit into the commerce of early Canada, and subsequent withdrawals from circulation resulted in increased scarcity for collectors, especially for examples in mint state. This piece is an outstanding gem, boasting uniform toning of slate grey with iridescent highlights of orange gold and blue-green. Like other mint-state examples, the strike is somewhat soft and would seem to be characteristic of the type. The near-pristine state of the lustrous surfaces more than demonstrate this coin's Gem attribution. One of the top 3 coins in the ICCS census, with only 1 coin graded finer in MS-67.
