50 Cents. 1898. PCGS graded Very Choice Uncirculated-64. Cross-graded ICCS MS-64. One might surmise, based on the mintage pattern for late Victorian 50 cents, that the 1898 was introduced at a time when there was a paucity of the denomination in Canadian commerce and that demand for half dollars was rising. The presumption is that the coins of 1898 were quickly and widely circulated, a hypothesis which is supported by the astonishingly low survival rate of examples in mint state, comparable even to the meagre mintage of 1894. This coin is one of only two pieces attributed by ICCS as uncirculated, the other being the MS-60 from the Belzberg / Norweb collection. As such, this coin stands out as both a tremendous rarity, both by condition and absolute terms.

This impressive coin boasts obverse cartwheel lustre that flashes over the silvery-white surface, unimpeded by the scant amber toning. The reverse palette is virtually identical, although the lustre is somewhat more nebulous but equally as attractive. Very nearly fully struck, with good detail throughout the hairlines and reverse wreath; only the jewels of St. Edward's crown are somewhat indistinct. Although a smattering of tiny contact marks preclude a gem designation, the staggering rarity of such an original, near-gem Victorian half dollar should not be underestimated. An opportunity for the advanced collector that is unlikely to be repeated in the near future.
